Labette County Budget Hit by Judge's Order

The Labette County budget has been hit with as much as a $350,000 added expense for the year due to a judge's decision. Judge Oliver Kent Lynch has made a decision to move court from the Parsons Judicial Center to the Oswego Courthouse. Commissioners say that they judge has the power to make the move, under Kansas Law the county and sheriff have responsibility for security. As a result, commissioners say they will now have to run full security at both locations as well as have the county attorney's staff Oswego for all types of criminal proceedings.

Commissioners have already made the decision to close the Parsons Judicial Center to the public except when court is actually in session effective today. Commissioner Lonnie Addis says the commission is looking at ways to cut the budget but may be forced to look at a tax increase at some point.
