GOP Sets Date to Choose New Sheriff

Montgomery County Republican Chairman, Virgil Peck, has set a date for a Convention of Montgomery County Republicans to determine the person who will succeed recently ousted Sheriff Bobby Dierks.

It is required by State Law to call a Convention “within 21 days of receipt of notice that a vacancy has occurred”. The set date is Thursday, January 23rd and by law has sent an official notice to each Republican Precinct Committeeman and Committeewoman eligible to vote for the replacement.

This will be held in the lower level of Four County Mental Health Center in Independence which is located at 3751 W. Main, and be called to order at 7:00 PM.

The Convention will be a public meeting although it's not required to do so.

As it relates to voting, Kansas law requires the “election shall be by secret paper ballot and the person elected shall be the one who receives the majority of all votes cast”.

After the Convention has made the selection, the Chair is responsible to execute a certificate stating the name of the person who has been elected to fill the vacancy to the Governor. The Governor will then have one week after receiving the certificate to appoint the person to be the New Montgomery County Sheriff.
