An early morning apartment fire leaves four families homeless in Independence. The three alarm fire at the Garden Walk Apartments on North 10th Street was discovered just after 4 a.m. Saturday. Four units were gutted by the blaze that appears to have started in a stairwell. Other units sustained smoke and water damage. Assistance came from Neodesha Fire-EMS Ladder truck and Independence Rural Fire. Interior crews were also able to rescue two dogs.
No injuries were reported. It is unclear what sparked the fire.
