Truancy is always usually a problem for any school out there. Roosevelt Middle School Principal Jeff Pegues tells us they have a little different method for absences, and it has worked quite well. Roosevelt middle School treats absences kind of like a job would be. You receive 10 excused absences at the beginning of the year with no questions asked. No matter the reason, you are allowed to have 10 excused absences. After 8 you will receive a notification saying your close to 10. If you have gone over your 10 excused absences, every absence from their on out has to be approved either by an administrator or by a doctor. If not it will be considered unexcused and the truancy policy begins. The truancy policy is either  3 unexcused in a row, 5 in a month and 7 in a semester.  Pegues says it’s an incredibly effective policy as their unexcused absence numbers have gone down by 70% and their attendance rates have gone up 30%.
